## Start with the basics
Before a long trip, inspect tyre condition and pressure, spare-wheel readiness, fluid levels, lights, wipers and battery condition. These checks are useful for both regular roads and rougher routes.
## Look underneath
A 4x4 inspection should also consider suspension joints, underbody protection, leaks, exhaust clearance and any recovery equipment that will be carried.
## Prepare for the route
The final checklist should match the journey, passenger load and terrain. Complete required service work before departure and keep a clear record of any follow-up item that is not urgent.
